CPP Disability Benefit
A monthly payment if a severe, long-term disability stops you from working and you've paid into CPP.
What it is
A monthly payment from the Canada Pension Plan for people under 65 who have worked and contributed to CPP but can no longer work regularly because of a severe, prolonged disability.
Who it is for
Does NOT require the DTC. You need enough past CPP work contributions AND a disability severe enough that it regularly prevents any substantial work.
Amount or value
Monthly payment based on your CPP contributions
How to apply
- Gather your medical information and work history.
- Complete the CPP Disability application (online through My Service Canada Account, or on paper).
- Have your doctor complete the medical report section.
- Submit and keep a copy of everything.
What you may need
- Enough CPP contributions (generally 4 of the last 6 years)
- A detailed medical report from your doctor
- Details of your work history and why you can't continue
Practical tips
- 'Severe and prolonged' is a high bar — describe your worst days honestly, not your best.
- If denied, you can request reconsideration — many are approved at that stage. Don't give up after a first no.
- Apply as soon as you stop being able to work; there can be back-pay.
Timing
Around 120 days for a decision.
