Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Designation
BC's provincial disability status for adults 18 and over with a severe impairment expected to last at least two years. It is the credential behind most other BC disability programs.
What it is
The standard application is form HR2883. Five prescribed classes can use the shorter HR3642 application instead: people on BC PharmaCare Plan P (palliative care), At Home Program participants, Community Living BC eligible clients, people receiving CPP Disability or the Post-Retirement Disability Benefit, and people with an Indigenous Services Canada PWD designation in the BC region.
Who it is for
The test is functional, not diagnostic. The impairment must directly and significantly restrict your ability to perform daily living activities, AND you must need an assistive device, the significant help or supervision of another person, or the services of an assistance animal.
Amount or value
No direct payment on its own — it is the designation that unlocks disability assistance, the transportation supplement and the ministry health supplements.
