Canada Student Grant for Students with Disabilities (StudentAid BC)
A non-repayable grant of $2,800 per program year (August 1 to July 31) for post-secondary students with a permanent, or persistent or prolonged, disability. Administered in B.C. through your StudentAid BC application.
What it is
This federal grant, delivered through StudentAid BC, helps cover education costs for students with disabilities. It is money you do not pay back, and it is available whether you study full-time or part-time. Disability status can be a permanent disability (lifelong) or a persistent or prolonged disability (12+ months). Once your disability status is verified, it also unlocks reduced course-load rules (40-59% counts as full-time) and other B.C. disability grants.
Who it is for
The current amount reflects a temporary 40% federal increase that runs until July 31, 2027. Once StudentAid BC verifies your disability status you are automatically considered for the province's other disability grants too. Note: StudentAid BC changed its process in June 2026 — new applicants use the online Disability status application instead of the old Appendix 8 form. This amount is a temporary increase in place until July 31, 2027 — check the current figure before you count on it.

How to apply
- Apply for StudentAid BC full-time or part-time funding online.
- In your StudentAid BC account, open the Disability status application in the Forms section (for applications submitted after June 23, 2026).
- Download the Disability Verification Form and have a qualified medical assessor complete it.
- Upload the signed form inside the Disability status application and submit your declaration.
- StudentAid BC reviews it (about 6 weeks) and posts the decision to your account; the grant is then included in your funding assessment.

Practical tips
- You can submit the disability verification any time — you do not have to wait for your loan application to finish.
- Permanent disabilities never need re-verification; persistent or prolonged disabilities are re-verified when you enter repayment or after a break of more than 5 years.
- If you already receive provincial disability assistance (PWD), tell your school's financial aid office — it can affect how your funding is structured.
