At Home Program: School-Aged Extended Therapies (SAET)

What it is

Up to $5,760 per 12-month period for each of occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech-language pathology (including therapist-assistant services), delivered one-to-one or in groups. Maximum billing rates: $160/hour for therapists, $60/hour for therapist assistants; up to $480 of the maximum can go to consultation, report writing and travel. A separate $1,920/year is available for chiropractic ($40/session) or massage ($40/hour). Exceptions to maximums are considered for post-surgical rehabilitation. Services must complement, not duplicate, school-based therapy.

Who it is for

SAET families were the first moved to the new Children and Youth Disability Benefit, starting April 2026 (therapies remain an approved use of the new benefit). SAET remains documented in the October 2025 At Home Program Guide and new At Home applications are accepted until March 2027 — check with AHP Medical Benefits about which stream applies to your child.

How to apply

1. Ensure the child is enrolled in the At Home Program
2. Have the treating OT, PT, SLP, chiropractor or massage therapist complete the At Home Program Request for School-Aged Extended Therapies form, including intended functional outcomes
3. Submit the request to AHP Medical Benefits for review
4. Approved therapists invoice AHP Medical Benefits directly

Practical tips

• The requesting therapist must coordinate with the school-based therapy team so services do not overlap
• Sequential therapy blocks (one goal at a time) are preferred over running everything simultaneously
• If your child moved to the Disability Benefit in April 2026, pay for the same therapies from the new $6,500/$17,000 allocation instead
• Post-surgical rehab can exceed the annual maximum — ask for an exception
