At Home Program: Medical Benefits

What it is

Figures come from the At Home Program Guide dated October 2025. Equipment limits include a wheelchair seating system up to $9,000, a basic manual wheelchair of $4,000, a basic scooter to $3,700, a standard electric hospital bed to $4,000, a floor or ceiling lift to $8,000 including the lift, two slings and installation, additional alternate positioning devices to $5,000, a floor therapy mat to a $500 lifetime maximum, and step stools to $200. Audiology equipment is covered to $8,000 for all devices combined in a three-year period. Therapies are covered to $5,760 per twelve-month period for each of occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech-language pathology, billed at $160 per hour for a therapist and $60 per hour for a therapist assistant. Chiropractic or massage is covered to $1,920 per twelve-month period, at $40 per chiropractic session and $40 per hour of massage. Dental is $700 per year for restorative procedures, orthodontic is $5,000 lifetime, and optical is prescription lenses and frames to $150 per year — all three must be pre-approved and purchased within six months of the approval. Routine dental care is not eligible. PharmaCare Plan F covers prescription medications, orthotics and prosthetics, needles and syringes for insulin-dependent diabetics, and blood glucose testing strips. Medical travel: Non-emergency medical travel must be pre-approved. It is covered only when the service is not available in your home community AND the round trip exceeds 80 kilometres. It pays the least costly car, bus, train, ferry or air travel for your child and one other person from the family home, car travel at the BC government rate of 63 cents per kilometre, accommodation to $150 per night plus $15 per night for hotel parking, highway tolls, and parking at the appointment. Meals are not reimbursed, and neither is travel within the city where the appointment is, or travel for appointments unrelated to your child's disability. Claims more than six months after the date of service are not accepted. Apply to the Travel Assistance Program (TAP BC) before using this benefit. Emergency ambulance service is free for enrolled children. What is not covered: The program is not intended for children with acute or temporary equipment needs, children admitted to hospital for more than four months, or children receiving in-home respite care through Nursing Support Services. Children or parents receiving an insurance settlement or court award related to the child's disability are not eligible.

Who it is for

Benefits run until the last day of the month your child turns 18, and PharmaCare Plan F coverage ends the same day. Start the adult disability assistance application about six months before that birthday — young people enrolled in the program get a streamlined route into it. New families can still apply until March 2027.
